A Story of Race and a Forbidden Love - 1028 Words
A Story of Race and a Forbidden Love Kevin Michael Albeck (KEABEC2492) ENG125 Prof. Danielle Slaughter November 16, 2012 The story ââ¬Å"Country Lovers was written in 1975 when times were different then they are today. This story was written about a farmerââ¬â¢s son and one of the children of the farmââ¬â¢s help. There are many aspects of this story that are wrong but the most pronounced one is the racial segregation. Even though certain races are perceived as inferior to some, there should be no such thing because we all need to work together to make the planet a better place and lives are ruined over racial this segregation. The theme of this story is about tough choices and racial divides. Throughout theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦She also changed her testimony at the trial saying that she never saw what she said she did during the preliminary inquiry. It is not made clear why she said that she saw him pour the liquid down the babyââ¬â¢s throat when what she heard were baby grunts as if the babyââ¬â¢s stomach were full. All of this truly shows how much she cared for Paulus. This st ory is about a place that is really hard for some of us in America to understand because we do not live with this amount of segregation. In certain places in Africa it is very strict on racial divides even to this day. Even with the world stage crying for equality in race, ethnic and gender there are many countries today that still have strict ethnic and racial divides as well as strict rules on the roles of women. Stories like this one should be part of any schoolââ¬â¢s curriculum. I did not know that countries were still like this until I was in my late teens early twenties. I received a big dose of cultural sensitivity training on my plane ride to Afghanistan in later 2001. I saw the horrible ways that women are treated over there and I saw this again on a trip to the horn of Africa. I use the word horrible because that is what it is to me by the standards I was raised with, but it is just normal life to them. References: Clugston, Wayne R. (2010). JOURNEY INTO LITERATURE. The Definition of a Teenager free essay sample
Turn to the left and put your hand on your hip. Just pretend to be cool, like youre hanging out with your friends. Think, Yeah! Im just chillin with my own style . This photographer was too funny. Youd wonder how a middle-aged man could maintain such enthusiasm in shooting pictures for the fashion section of a teenage magazine as though he was capturing a double rainbow in a canyon of Yosemite National Park. I had managed to walk down the hallway in stilettos, and off to Hearst Towers Studio D for my very first photo shoot for Seventeen magazine. The photographer tested the lights as I stepped on and off the wooden square towards the back of the room. Obviously, I knew why I was being placed on the square but I couldnt help but feel bewildered. This crew seemed so glamorous and well-groomed that I couldve voluntarily swapped places and snapped their photos instead. We will write a custom essay sample on The Definition of a Teenager or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page While I was on the midnight ferry boat home on that Friday night, exhaustion possessed every part of my body and took the life out of me a feeling that none of my friends would ever have to endure until giving birth or experiencing a combat mission in Africa. To them, this ferry is a boat that sails the ocean for their leisure, to the marvelous island of Manhattan where they spend a night out for dinner, or loiter from store to store on the cobblestone streets of SoHo. To me, this ferry was something like the Titanic. Ultimately, it would lead to the death of me. Exhaustion striked me every night with a beating, taking the life out of me over and over again. Such as the night before, after my performance at a local benefit show. Such as the night before that, after spending quality time with my laptop and a large metal can filled with chemicals and caffeine to keep me company until dawn. There were just so many things to do and so many different people to be! I didnt want to go to the movies, I wanted to go to the concert hall. It was as though my friends lived in California and I lived in NYC I always needed to be ahead in my own time. I was under pressure to grow up fast, act professional, and give impressions of maturity. Iââ¬â¢m talking triple lattes, stilettos and lipstick, study groups in Central Park, the New York Times and cups of tea. Did this make me a classy and mature teenager of America? I canââ¬â¢t count how many times Iââ¬â¢ve longed to go to a school football game or a trip to the mall afterschool like my friends near home. I constantly felt a yearning for teenage normality, the kind that doesnt include downing caffeine and stressing about deadlines like a 46-year old journalist. I knew it wasnt going to happen though. They say that our surroundings define who we are. My friends are the characters in a picturesque high school movie. Who am I? Sometimes, I am the constant flicker of sunlight on every speeding taxi. Other times, Manhattan smokes me so hard that I become the waft of pollution that burns from every buildings exhaust.

A report regarding the attractiveness of alternative countries Research Paper
A report regarding the attractiveness of alternative countries Research Paper A report regarding the attractiveness of alternative countries ââ¬â Research Paper Example Prospects of FDI in China Inserts His/Her Inserts Grade Inserts Contents Contents 2 Potential return on FDI in China 3 Tax benefits 4 Special Economic Zones 4 FDI confidence index 4 Bibliography 5 Potential return on FDI in China Chinaââ¬â¢s persistence in attracting FDI is one good reason why future investors are attracted to its large market. Economies of scale make it better for the multinationals in China to be located in same areas and share information. China provides a lot of incentives to companies that plan on investing. According to some statistics, in 2008 china was the most attractive country for FDI. China is a country with where cheap labor is easily available giving a cost advantage to the companies investing. (Diego Quer, 2008) Moreover, China is largely a buyerââ¬â¢s market keeping in mind the countryââ¬â¢s population of 1.3 billion people. And with time there is an expectation that the purchasing power of Chinese residents is likely to increase sharply because of the lower rates of inflation and a good annual GDP growth rate of 8 % for the country. To top it all Chinaââ¬â¢s government recently has eased down the regulations and laws concerning foreign investment in China. As a result of these incentives a lot of companies invested in China and as according to research FDI flows into china were of about 83.5 billion dollars which grew to 108.3 billion in 2008 with continued investment announcements and a positive investor outlook. (Jianhong Qi, 2008) The trend of FDI in China has changed since 2001 after it joined WTO. Since then until now foreign investors who have invested in China have formed companies entirely owned by foreign capital. Other than industry and hi-tech foreign investment is also allowed in the financial services, insurance and banking sectors. (Jianhong Qi, 2008) Tax benefits Most of the benefits that the Chinese government offers to foreign investors investing in China are in the form of tax benefits. These include customs and income tax benefits which are given for investing in a particular special economic zone. Also value added tax benefits are offered. These benefits are approved mostly depending on the nature of investment. (Diego Quer, 2008) Special Economic Zones Talking of the Special Economic Zones in China, there are 5 zones in the south of China here tax benefits are offered. These tax benefits include a corporate tax of 15%, a tax exemption for the first two years of operation along with a tax rate of 12.5% for another three years, a 6 years tax exemption for projects in environment protection, infrastructure and energy. (Kandil, 2011) There are similar benefits offered for investment made in Shanghai where there are 5 development zones specializing in agriculture, financial services etc. FDI confidence index The foreign direct investment confidence index provides a unique look for companies intending to invest internationally giving them an insight of the present and future prospects. This survey is conducted by A.T. Kearney Since the year 2002 China was a top ranked destination for foreign investors. Also according to the 2010 FDI confidence index China holds the top position among the 25 countries with high confidence of investors. This index and optimism of investors is an indication of a strong economy. (Kandil, 2011) Bibliography Diego Quer, E. C. (2008). Foreign Direct Investment in China: Beyond the Representative Office.
